Elders Discuss Role In Modern Society

An organizer of an elders conference getting underway today in North Battleford says elders want to bring back the old customs when they played a much more prominent role in Aboriginal society.

A.J. Felix says that’s a major purpose behind the three-day Treaty Six Elders Forum.

Felix says the goal is to figure out how elders fit into modern society.

He says a big concern is that the wisdom of the elders is increasingly being ignored by youth and by Aboriginal leaders.

Felix says that strays away from the old laws and customs of Aboriginal people.

As a result, he says many people — especially elders — are hurting.

He says the elders feel cut off, devalued and unappreciated.
