An initiative designed to employ young Aboriginal people has successfully completed five programs and has received funding for three more.

The Saskatoon Health Region partners with CanSask Career & Employment to deliver its Step Into Health Careers or STEP program, which provides youth with certificate training, work experience and mentorship within a variety of health care fields such as special care aides, home health aides, sterile processing workers and housekeeping.

The region’s Vice President of People Strategies Bonnie Blakley says the program benefits the youth who get meaningful employment, but it’s also a major benefit to the health region as it works towards a more representative workforce.

Blakley says one the three upcoming programs will focus on a rural location.
