A 17-year-old male charged with the death of a man in Canoe Narrows is making his first court appearance today in Patunak.

RCMP arrested the youth over the weekend after the body of 73-year-old James Durocher was found in the aftermath of a house fire in Canoe Narrows.

RCMP and Canoe Lake firefighters were called out to a house fire in the area at about 8:15 Thursday night.

Durocher’s body was found inside the home after the fire was brought under control.

The decision to hear the case in Patuanak is not going over well with some members of the victim’s family.

Joe Durocher is a nephew to the deceased.

Durocher says he is frustrated the case has been moved so far north.

He says it would be best for everyone if they could see what is going on.

Durocher says many in the community are also worried there may be other culprits still on the loose.

He adds his uncle was his best friend who always liked to come over and eat his wife’s bannock.

Durocher says he can’t think of anyone who would want to do him harm.
