Survivors Don’t Have to Provide Witnesses: Lawyer

A lawyer wants residential school survivors who were abused to know they don’t need the same proof they would need in court.

Montreal lawyer Rainbow Miller gave that advice during a residential school survivors’ conference in North Battleford yesterday.

Miller says the federal government recognizes things like sexual abuse occur in private, so there aren’t likely to be any witnesses.

As a result, residential school survivors who were abused don’t have to produce witnesses.

Miller says they don’t have to produce other evidence, either.

He adds time is running out for anyone wanting to file a claim for the Common Experience Payment, as the deadline is September 19th.
