The Council of Canadians is raising alarm bells over a new piece of legislation concerning First Nations water.
The Council says Bill S-11 contains loopholes which could open the door for corporations to operate or manage water services on reserve.
Emma Lui is a water-policy expert with the council.
She explains the fear is some bands will use outside services because they’re so cash-strapped, and then lose control over how the water is operated.
The council says regulations under the bill take precedence over Aboriginal and treaty rights as well.
