Saskatchewan is taking steps toward giving pharmacists more power when it comes to prescriptions.

The Ministry of Health announced this morning that pharmacists will have expanded authority when renewing prescriptions.

This will allow for extending refills on existing prescriptions and emergency supplies of medications.

Ray Joubert is the Registrar for the Saskatchewan College of Pharmacists and says there are guidelines and training that has to be followed as well as working in partnership with physicians.

Joubert adds that narcotics and controlled substances are prescribed according to federal regulations and pharmacists will still require a doctor’s prescription.
