Indian Affairs says a few thousand people have recently applied to become First Nations citizens.

The applications come as a result of Bill C-3.

On January 31st, Ottawa amended the Indian Act to allow grandchildren of women who had lost their status to apply for citizenship cards.

INAC’s Genevieve Guilbert says the have received over 3,500 applications so far.

Guilbert says the low number of claims that were accepted shouldn’t be misinterpreted.

She explains in a lot of cases they’re simply waiting for more information before processing the application.
