Lonechild Loses License for Impaired Driving

The Chief of the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations has received a fine and a one-year driving ban as sentence for an impaired driving conviction.
Chief Guy Lonechild has to pay $1,150 dollars and can apply to SGI in three months for the ignition lock program, although that doesn’t guarantee he will be accepted.
It was revealed in a joint sentencing submission that Lonechild was stopped around two in the morning on September 3rd, 2009 because police ran his plates and discovered his license was suspended.
Outside court, Lonechild told reporters he doesn’t remember why his license was suspended but thinks it might have been traffic violations such as outstanding tickets.
Lonechild says he is taking steps to deal with his alcohol addiction, such as seeking help from Elders.
A councillor from Witchekan First Nation attended this morning’s sentencing hearing.
Bobby Cameron says he was in Saskatoon on business.
He wouldn’t comment on Lonechild’s legal situation, but said there are far more important issues to deal with on First Nations.
Cameron called Lonechild a “smart man who knows the issues” facing First Nations people.
He couldn’t say where things were at with the non-confidence motion some chiefs are trying to bring forward to remove Lonechild as chief of the FSIN.
Lonechild confirmed again today that he plans to continue in that position.
