Buffalo River Woman Unhappy With Election

A woman on the Buffalo River Dene Nation says she’s upset with how a recent election on the reserve was carried out.

Brenda Montgrand says she and several others voted at an advance poll about a week before the election.

She says she voted for a candidate at the advance poll whose name was blacked out later at the main election site.

She learned later it was because he had apparently dropped out of the race.

Montgrand argues all the votes she and others cast for him were essentially wasted and also skewed the results of the election.

Montgrand says under the election code that candidate should have stepped down no later than 2 days before the advance poll.

Montgrand, who ran for a councillor’s position herself, launched an appeal but says it didn’t go anywhere.
