Meadow Lake Sawmill Start-Up Fairly Smooth

The start-up of the Meadow Lake Sawmill has gone fairly well so far, a spokesman says.

The sawmill began operating Monday, after being shut down since November.

All last year, employment was scaled back to one shift at the mill and then one at the planer.

President and CEO Trevor Reid says start-up has gone well, although there have been a few small problems to overcome.

The company has rehired about 30 laid-off workers. It would have rehired more, but some employees got jobs elsewhere.

About 20 new employees have been hired. They’re undergoing a six-week training period.

Initially, the mill was only able to turn out about 75 percent of the production goal.

But Reid is sure that will improve, as workers get used to their new positions.

As a result of those glitches, so far the mill has only managed to achieve about 75 per cent of its target production, but Reid is confident that will improve.
