CNSC Asks Uranium Mines, Mills to Review Safety

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is asking uranium mines and mills across the country to review their safety procedures in the wake of the disaster in Japan.

A letter sent out this week by the regulator asks facilities to review initial lessons learned from the disaster and focus on external hazards, be it floods, fire or other extreme weather.

AREVA spokesman Alun Richards says they are always on the lookout for things that could go wrong.

Richards adds uranium mines are also much different than nuclear power plants like the ones in Japan.

He says all of their facilities are self-contained and they have crews ready to respond to emergencies at a moment’s notice.
