Youth, Elders Keeping Traditions Alive

A young man from the Standing Buffalo Dakota First Nation is trying to keep a tradition alive on his reserve.

Lyndon Wajunta was presenting his winter count this morning at the Indigenous Peoples Health Research Centre’s conference in Saskatoon.

Winter counts are pieces of hide that people draw pictures on to tell their story.

Wajunta says it’s important to him to continue cultural traditions so they are kept alive.

Winter counts got their names because in the Dakota language, you ask someone “how many winters they have” when asking “how old they are.”
