MN-S President Defends Meeting On Constitution

There appears to be some disagreement in the ranks of Metis leadership as to who can call a special general assembly meeting.

Such a meeting had been scheduled for this past weekend in Saskatoon to discuss constitutional reform, but it was cancelled.

Some members of the Provincial Metis Council said the meeting had been called in a “unilateral and undemocratic way,” arguing that only the Metis Nation Legislative Assembly can call such a meeting.

Metis Nation – Saskatchewan President Robert Doucette says he believes Metis people, or the Annual General Assembly, can also make that call.

Doucette says no one would have been voting on previous constitutional reform packages.

He says he wanted to hear from Metis people to get direction on where the organization should go.

Doucette also says Metis leaders shouldn’t be afraid to hear from people, and people also shouldn’t be afraid of change.
