Metis Children, Mothers Reunited Through Program

A program designed to reunite troubled mothers with their children is making great strides, according to the president of a Metis outreach group.

 

The Fostering Families Project was launched over a year and a half ago in Saskatoon.

 

Since then, it has taken kids out of foster care and put them into sheltered apartment dwellings where they are reunited with their mothers and support counselors.

 

The family is then given help to finding a stable situation of their own.

 

Shirley Isbister is the president of the Central Urban Metis Federation, the group carrying out the program.

 

She says 109 kids have been reunited with their mothers since the program began.

 

Isbister says the need for the service is overwhelming.

 

Isbister explains CUMFI’s strong relationship with the provincial government makes the program possible.
