Saskatchewan First Nations can join a new partnership with SaskPower to develop power generation projects.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed this morning between SaskPower, the provincial government and the newly-formed First Nations Power Authority, a non-profit, membership-based corporation that is supported by various First Nations with existing or imminent power projects.

FSIN Chief Guy Lonechild says this is great opportunity for renewable energy ideas, especially in the North.

He adds this is a visionary announcement for the future of First Nations business and development.

The province says SaskPower will need new power projects to meet the increased demand for electricity.

FNPA will hold discussions with SaskPower and the province to formalize its relationship with the Crown Corporation.
