A long-time member of the Prince Albert Police Service says she is looking forward to helping Aboriginal youth find jobs as officers.

SGt. Gwen Kennedy recently agreed to a position with the provincial government’s Ministry of Corrections, Public Safety and Policing.

Over the coming months, she will help develop a recruitment strategy so more First Nations and Metis people can become police and RCMP officers.

Kennedy says there are a lot of organizations out there trying to increase their Aboriginal workforce, so the recruiting challenges are many.

At the same time, she says keeping Aboriginal officers is just as important as recruiting them.

Kennedy adds there is no set number of recruits they are looking for, but an increase is needed.
