Commercial Fishers At Crossroads

How Saskatchewan commercial fishers will leave the Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation has dominated much of this year’s annual fishers conference in Prince Albert.
Delegates spent much of this morning meeting in-camera discussing how to develop a business plan and where to turn for investors.
Originally, Saskatchewan fishers were poised to leave the FFMC this year, but the province extended that deadline to next year.
They would like to have their own fish processing plant in this province in the hopes of making more money.
Beauval fisher George Hansen says the fishers hope to own 51 per cent of such a venture.
Hansen doesn’t know where the investors will come from and how the fish plant will be a reality.
He is disappointed the provincial government won’t offer financial help.
He also admits there is a group of fishers who are hesitant to leave the FFMC.
