A doctor in Aboriginal health says people living with diabetes can draw upon Traditional medicines as well as Western.
Dr. Veronica McKinney says using the Medicine Wheel is a helpful way to treat your diabetes.
Speaking at the Canadian Diabetes Association’s Aboriginal gathering, says western medicine really focuses on medication, while a more traditional approach focuses on the whole person.
McKinney says when treating diabetes, a person needs to take care of their mental, emotional and spiritual self in addition to their physical.
She says a person needs to determine what would be best for them: traditional medicine, Western medicine or a mix of both.
