The leader of an anti-racism group says he’s shocked by the transfer of an inmate to the Saskatchewan Penitentiary.

Bob Hughes says he had received indications from the provincial government that William Strongheart’s case would be settled to the satisfaction of everyone.

Hughes, who heads up the Saskatchewan Coalition Against Racism, had lobbied against the transfer.

He argued it only was happening because prison officials had just realized Strongheart’s sentence was actually a few days over two years.

He says Strongheart should be allowed to continue serving his time at the Regina jail where he was involved in programs aimed at helping him re-integrate into society.

Hughes says provincial officials have told him Strongheart will still receive credit for the programs he’s taken but Hughes isn’t convinced.

Hughes adds he’s trying to get in touch with Strongheart to discuss his state of affairs.
