Workplace safety officials are looking into a Uranium City man’s claim that he was recently exposed to asbestos while working at the abandoned Gunnar mine site.

Wayne Augier works for a sub-contractor involved in the mine clean-up.

Augier claims some of the substance blew in the direction of he and a co-worker in late March.

Occupational Health and Safety has concluded in a preliminary report that the men were not exposed to a significant health risk.

The Saskatchewan Research Council is overseeing the mine cleanup, and spokesman Joe Muldoon says his group is reviewing this incident.

The OHS report states that Augier shouldn’t have been allowed on site without any asbestos training.

The report also says there was a failure to confer with an asbestos consultant before the waste site was disturbed — and the waste in question may not have been properly wetted during the loading, transport and dumping process.
