A Metis leader and a civil servant who spent much of his life helping Metis people were remembered yesterday at Batoche.
The accomplishments of Gabriel Dumont and what he did for the Metis Nation are legendary.
Lesser known is the contribution paid to Metis people by the late Walter Rudnicki.
He spent years working with Metis and often went above and beyond the call of duty to tip them off about the impacts of government policy.
A memorial was held for the two men yesterday afternoon.
Metis Nation – Saskatchewan president Robert Doucette says the event has created a lot of good will.
A commemorative plaque was also unveiled at a homestead at Gabriel’s Crossing.
