Academic Returns As Chief Of Wahpeton

Members of the Wahpeton Dakota Nation have re-elected a former chief to again lead the band.

Dr. Leo Omani was chosen over incumbent Cy Standing in Friday’s vote.

Omani previously served as chief from 1996 to 1999.

Last year, he earned his PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of Saskatchewan.

The four people elected to council in the band custom election are Janice Standing, Gary Standing, and Pearl Tacan and John Waditaka.
