Nuclear Waste Storage Debated In Beauval

The school gymnasium in Beauval was packed yesterday with northerners who came there for a forum on nuclear waste.
The event was hosted by a group calling itself “The Committee for Future Generations” — which is concerned the Nuclear Waste Management Organization has been having talks with northern communities about potentially storing nuclear waste in the province’s north.
Long-time politician Jim Sinclair is a member of an elders’ advisory group for the NWMO.
Sinclair notes an elder from Pinehouse, George Smith, has said the financial benefits from storing nuclear waste may be a way for one “poison” to solve another — namely, the problem of drug and alcohol addiction in northern youth.
The head of the group that organized yesterday’s forum, Beauval elder Max Morin, fears some elders are being told the only way to keep their youth out of trouble is to store nuclear waste.
