Northern Elders Wrap Up Week Of Reconnecting

Roughly 400 people took part in a northern Saskatchewan elders gathering held earlier this week in Pinehouse.

Organizers hosted traditional cultural activities with the goal of seeing elders from various communities reconnect over the last four days.

Pinehouse elder Philip Tinker says that reconnection is needed.

Tinker misses the days when he was a youngster in Buffalo Narrows and people from other communities would come by to fish and share the lakes.

He says northerners are “far apart now” — “since the government has split us all up with their policies”.

Tinker also says northerners used to help and look after each other a lot more before the welfare system took over.
